DIY sanding rolls by Daniel Moran FIPG
1. Using grade P800 felt back emery paper rolls. This is a fine grade, coarsegrades are available but I find you can go straight from this to the polishing motor. From file to paper to polish.
2. You will need a tapered mandrill piece for your pendant drill.
3. Roll up the strip nice and tight, use about 30 cm to give yourself a good size to work with.
4. Once it’s rolled give it a tap down with a hammer on your flat plate.
5. Make sure you get it the right way round, with the spin, hold in a pair of tweezers and glue with super glue, you don’t need loads but just enough to seal it well, too much and you waste too much when you rip it off, too little and it comes undone.
6. Use a sharp point to centre the hole(the glued end) and then with the drill
7. I find if you put wax on the roll, it stops the dust going everywhere when working, gives you a smoother finish, and best of all saves loads of gold going everywhere and a better holiday at the end of the year courtesy of the refiners
8. As the paper wears out you just rip a strip off and carry on.
Conclusion
More effective and time efficient than a split pin, cheaper than buying the pre-made ones and your choice of grade of abrasive.
