Key skills for a professional enameller
Enamel is a vitreous substance composed of powdered glass that can be transparent, translucent, or opaque. It’s coloured with metallic oxides and applied to a metal substrate. The piece is then fired in a kiln or with a torch to melt the enamel and fuse it to the metal.
Multiple firings allow for the creation of layered designs with varying colours and textures. Common enameling techniques include champlevé, basse-taille, cloisonné, plique-à-jour, enameling en rond bosse, Limoges, and sunken enamel.
Artistic Skill
A strong sense of design, colour theory, and composition is crucial for creating visually appealing enamel pieces.
Technical Proficiency
A deep understanding of enamelling techniques, including firing temperatures, enamel application, and metalworking skills.
